In keeping with the Society's mandate to support the preservation of Ottawa's Jewish history, a new award program was inaugurated in 2006. The purpose of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society Award is to honour an individual or organization which has made an outstanding contribution toward the preservation of Ottawa's Jewish history. All nominations are to be submitted in writing to the Chair of the Nominating Committee by June 30th. Each nomination should be supported by three OJHS members in good standing and include a description of the nominee's contribution to the preservation of Ottawa's Jewish history. A history of the Ottawa Jewish community has been written under the chairmanship of Anna Bilsky and published by General Store Publishing House. Entitled A Common Thread: A History of the Jews of Ottawa, this illustrated book tells how the Jewish community of Ottawa grew, changed, and prospered from the late 1800s up to the present. The book is available in soft cover (ISBN 978-1-897508-46-6) or hard cover (ISBN 978-1-897508-57-2) at $30 and $50, respectively, plus shipping and handling and GST. The Society has also reprinted and distributes "There I was ...", a book of reminiscences by Ottawa Jewish war veterans.


Eulogy Program

The Society arranges, on a voluntary basis, the recording of eulogies read at the Chapel on Cuba Avenue. A copy of the eulogy is provided to the family of the deceased and one copy is deposited with the Ottawa Jewish Archives for long-term preservation.
